Betty's Beach east of Albany

End of the journey

Well, can't believe it is nearly over. Leaving Bremer Bay this morning and will find a campsite by the beach for the next three nights before we arrive at Denmark on Tuesday. Will pull everything out of the van and scrub from too to toe. A big job but being at Poddy Cottage will be a joy. Thrilled Mama will be coming down mid July for a few days. Anyone else please join us too.
Bremer Bay a small town with 300 residents but summer time blows out to 10,000 just like Denmark!! Four fishing boats here going for shark and meulies or sardines, and a nice pub where we had dinner with a couple from Albany. Two caravan parks, plenty of new houses and subdivisions and a lot for sale. A pathetic general store and not much else. A holiday town with magnificent beaches.
Better get going and pack up for the next car drive to find a remote camp spot.

Venus Bay

Hi All, well we are getting closer to WA.... Presently at the holiday and fishing place called Venus Bay. This west coast of the Eyre Peninsula is incredibly rugged, fantastic cliffs, huge seas, sand dunes, amazingly clear water. Can be awfully windy or luckily today nice and sunny, clear skies. The caravan park is right on the bay and we are lucky enough to have a view from our window. We had a big walk around the point. Reece stopped and did a little painting while I did the big loop. Spent ages watching a pod of dolphins playing in the surf. I counted 12 so that means ther were many more that I didn't see. All the towns along the coast have nice sheltered bays and long jetties. This one has three prawn trawlers moored along side. This area is like a lagoon so it is very protected but to get to the ocean the trawlers have to negotiate quite a big swell and in bad weather can be extremely dangerous. Many small boats are in the bay trying their luck at fishing. Garfish and whiting are the preferred catch. We will move on tomorrow to Streaky Bay then Fowlers Bay, Ceduna for stores then the Nullabor Highway. We had a great time in Port Lincoln. Certainly good fun having bro-in-law Bill join us. He seemed quite comfy in the swag and didn't even need to use the hot water bottle I gave him for his birthday. Although if he was still with us I'm sure it would have used it the last two nights .... It has been freezing at night. Also great to have some time with old friend Freddie Tucker. He seems to be very settled there now. He has an electric powered boat in which he takes tourists on a two hour tour of the marina in Port Lincoln. Port Lincoln is the biggest fishing port ... There is so much going on. Prawning, oysters, mussels, kingfish, tuna. The kingfish fingerlings are bred at Arno Bay, then brought to P.L. And put in big cages in the bay and fattened up. The same with the tuna except they are wild caught the brought into the cages for fattening for about six months. From the Caravan park at Port Lincoln there were boats going to and from the cages continually taking feed out etc. the marina is very busy and the boats enormous. We caught up with Tracy and Matt Waller. Matt is Liz Schmitz nephew. They have a tourism business called Adventure Bay Charter. Shark cage diving , but they don't put out blood bait ... Instead they attract the sharks by playing AC/DC music. Can also go and see the seals..their new boat looks amazing. It is dark grey with the name of the boat Shark Warrior in orange. It looks so smart and mean.
We left P.L. And took the caravan through the truck wash... What a treat. First night was wild and woolly by Sheringa Beach. Huge wild beach and so windy... Too windy to get out so I read a Michael Connolly book in the afternoon. But the next day a nice walk along the beach where we found the message in a bottle and a very nice fisherman gave us a salmon he had just caught. I have just written a letter to Saige Vandeleur who sent the message and enclosed his message as well. I'm sure he will be excited to get it. He is six years old. Hope he will email us...
Hope everyone is ok. Lots of love Penelope

Back in Adelaide

Back in Adelaide after a week on Kangaroo Island with Di an Jamie . We had a great time with them. Reece and Jamie talked non stop about tractors and farming!! Saw every inch of the island and visited most of the tourist spots which included the eucalyptus farm, King Island Distillery and bought some expensive gin. It is quite remote and of course everything comes over on the ferry. The main town is Kingscote and there are three other settlements Americam River, Penneshaw and Pardana. Three primary schools and one High School with 4,400 population. Sheep farming and some cropping. Most of the island is very hilly. Coastline very rugged in parts and some very nice sandy beaches. Much too cold for a swim tho. Seals lie around an the rocks. Visited Admiral Rock which is a breeding area. Spent ages just watching them. They are so graceful in the water but look like they should sink. Our accommodation was excellent. A two bedroom house overlooking the bay at Kingscote with everything we needed. Plenty of squid being caught on the town jetty next to the seals on the rocks there. Apparently penguin numbers have dropped because the seals have them for dinner.... The ferry from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw takes 50 minutes $49 each way and would have cost $800 for the caravan and car. It isn't very far but very expensive.. Got back to Adelaide about 2.30 after two hour drive up Fleurieu peninsula from the ferry. Couldn't find the other sheets as I needed to change them as Ray had been in my bed while I was in Perth.... I had hung them out the day I left for Perth and luckily two weeks later they were still on the line!,,!!
So today we will head off towards Port Pirie and make our way to Port Lincoln where we will meet Bill on Monday night. Just having a cuppa in bed.. It is pretty cool Nice!
Bill... Better bring your winter pyjamas...it is pretty damn cold at night and the swag doesn't have heating!!!
Love Penelope
